In the early hours of Saturday, February 2, the members of the Moapa Valley High School Encore Choir were working to organize their yard and bake sale fundraiser. The Choir is planning an educational trip to Salt Lake City and found that they were short of the funds needed for everyone to attend. Laree Gomez, an Encore Choir parent helped organize the sale and worked with her friends and neighbors in the community to put on the sale. Before the sale opened at 7:00 am crowds had gathered at Gomez’s Overton home where the sale took place.
Several people all over the Valley had donated items for the yard sale and many had brought baked goods for the choir members to sell.
“We really appreciate the support from the community,” Gomez said. “There were a lot of people who helped out with donations and baking, we couldn’t have done it without them.”
Gomez said that the sale was a great success. “We made enough money to help the kids who needed money to be able to go on the trip,” Gomez said.
While in Salt Lake City, the Choir will sing at the Cathedral of the Madeline and the Shriners Children’s Hospital. The students will also be attending a workshop conducted by Dr. Brady Allred, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at the University of Utah and the Artistic Director of the Salt Lake Choral Artists. The choir students will be attending a rehearsal of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and a performance of the Utah Symphony Orchestra.
