The Northeast Clark County Bleed Off of the 2007-2008 school year had its second round on Monday, January 28. The competition, in its second year, is between Moapa Valley High School and Virgin Valley High School and is sponsored by the National Honors Society.

United Blood Services has been coming out to the Valley holding blood drives for some time. Last year, Kyle and Keenan Wolf, of Moapa Valley, still smarting from the 2006 state game loss to Virgin Valley on the gridiron, proposed a competition between the two schools over National which could draw the most blood, said Julie Lindsay of United Blood Services. “I told them that if they set up the competition I’d buy the trophy,” Lindsey said.

Three blood drives are held each year, one in September, one in January, and one in May.

MVHS Principal Grant Hamivold donates red blood cells. This is the procedure where they take out twice the amount of blood seperate the red blood cells and put back everything else. It takes more time but counts for double the units.

In last years competition the Pirates won by 29 units. With the Virgin Valley blood drive set for next week and the numbers not available for the Moapa Valley blood drive at press time for this edition, Moapa Valley was up in the competition by four units after the September drives.

There was a steady stream of students and faculty coming into the auditorium making their way onto the stage for the experience to have their blood drawn. “This is the third time I have given blood,” said MVHS student Kyle Peterson, “I will do it again in May too. I like to help people out and it doesn’t really hurt that much considering how much it helps people it doesn’t hurt.”

Lindsay did acquire a trophy for last year’s competition. The trophy will travel between schools as one school wins and the other loses. There are eight spaces on the trophy to show the competition year and which school won for that year. For now, the trophy is kept in a place of honor on the windowsill of Mrs. Joyce Olsen’s classroom at Moapa Valley High School.
