Moapa Valley Progress
On the strength of Jonathon Oglesby’s three-medal performance at the Clark County School District forensics tournament held at Coronado High School in Las Vegas on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Pirates repeated as champions of their division.
Oglesby won the oral declamation event, finished second in extemporaneous commentary, and third in impromptu speaking to earn the bulk of the points for Moapa Valley. He also won three of four rounds of Lincoln Douglas debate narrowly missing the cut to advance to the quarter final round.
Jessica Cameron added points to the team total with her fourth-place finish in dramatic interpretation of literature. Kylea McMurray also chipped in with a fifth-place finish in the senate competition.
Competition proved to be fierce as twenty teams sent their four best entries in eighteen events in this tournament. Green Valley turned out to be the best of the field in all divisions with Palo Verde, Advanced Technology Academy and Moapa Valley bringing up second through fourth. Moapa Valley’s strong finish earned them the small school championship. Virgin Valley finished second and Bonanza third in this division.
This county tournament is the lead in to the state tournament to be held in Reno during the last week in March. The Pirates have one more local tournament at Virgin Valley High School to help set the team for a run at a third state speech and debate championship. All high schools take two speakers in each of nine events and speak it out to determine the best in the state.
