Lyon Middle School seventh grade student Thomas Evans won the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and its Ladies Auxiliary Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest. At the VFW luncheon, held on Saturday, February 2, at the Old Logandale School Evans was presented a plaque and a check for $150.
The VFW sponsors the Patriot’s Pen Written Essay Contest. Evans’ winning essay was entitled, “Why I am an American Patriot.” Evans presented his essay on November 1, 2007 and won the District 6 competition.
Evans was also selected as a finalist in the statewide competition. As a state finalist Evans received a plaque, a lapel pin, a certificate of merit, and a $500 check. District 6 Senior Vice-commander Jim Dorsey presented Thomas with his awards. After receiving his various awards at the February 2 event Evans took to the podium to read his winning essay to the assembled lunch guests of VFW Post 8336.
The Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest is an annual competition sponsored by the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary. Students from grade 6-8 are eligible to compete. Essays must be submitted to the local post by November 1 each year.
