The Las Vegas Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus (LVMYS&C) performed at the Old Overton Gym on Sunday evening, April 20. The concert was free to the public but attendees brought canned goods to donate to the Cappalappa Family Resource Center.
In the orchestra there are 45 youth; in the chorus 38. Four of these 83 talented youth are local to Moapa Valley. Megan Potter is in the Chorus, Erin Hills, Violist; Grant Pray, Cellist and Shelby Simper Violinist.
The Symphony is under the direction of David Skouson and the Chorus under the direction of DeNae Handy. The LVMYS&C meets early each Saturday morning to practice for two hours. The groups performance included a variety of different styles and genres covering musical territory ranging from Beethoven to arrangements of LDS Hymns.
The directors of the group expressed pleasure with the hard work done by the youth musicians. “It is a pleasure to work with these kids, to breathe their air of their potential is a blessing” said Choral Director, DeNae Handy. She spoke about the early morning practices and how hard all of the kids work. “We absolutely love them!” she concluded.
