The Moapa Valley High School Track Teams participated the SUU Invitational in Cedar City, Utah over the weekend of April 26. The Pirates and Lady Pirates used the tough regional competition at this event to fine-tune their skills for the Division Meet at Moapa Valley in early May.

The Pirates did well on the Men’s side of the tournament as they finished in sixteenth place in the tough tournament. Overall, the Pirates scored eighteen points in the ultra-competitive meet which featured several high finishes from Moapa Valley. Some of these high finishes were not scored because they narrowly missed being finalists.

As usual, Moapa Valley did particularly well in the Relay events. The Pirates combined to take a fifth place finish in the 4×800 meter relay.

MVHS runners also got several fair performances from their stars in the Hurdle events who will be key if Moapa Valley plans on winning their first State Championship since 2001. Senior Conley Masters did particularly well, placing sixth in the 110 Meter Hurdles. Both Masters and Matt Delgadillo placed in the 300 meter hurdles with respectable times.

The other Pirate stars did well in their prospective events as both the Track and Field sides performed fairly. In the 3200 meter run, freshman Josh Thompson was able to place in the top twenty in a race that featured over fifty runners and in the 800 meter race, senior Josh Witter had a respectable finish as he ended in the top-eleven.

In the Field events, Jax Howard and the throwers had a good day as they helped Moapa Valley earn several team points. Howard took third in the Discus and took ninth in the Shot Put. Justin Ibarra was also able to rally for a seventh place finish in the Shot Put for the Pirates.

The Lady Pirates had a harder time placing in several events. But the Invitational wasn’t without highlights for Moapa Valley. Blythe Thompson was able to fight for a seventh place finish in the 300 Meter Hurdles and Thompson was also able to get a high finish in the 800 Meter run, placing eleventh. The Pirates also got a respectable finish from their 1600 meter relay team.

With just a few tuneups meets left, the Moapa Valley Track Teams will continue to prepare for the first full week of May as that will be the time when Moapa Valley High School will play host to the Southern 1A, 2A, and 3A leagues for all of their respective state qualifying meets. The meets, which will be held at Pirate Stadium, will send the top two teams to state and the best three qualifiers in each event.
