Last week Moapa Valley High School held their annual M Week. This week-long celebration of school spirit is the last of the school spirit weeks before the end of the year. The highlights of the week were the evening activities, the senior talent show and the annual Mr. M Competition.

Each evening brought a new activity. Monday hundreds of students participated in the Spring

Music concert, which featured every instrumental musical group at the high school. On Tuesday the Student Council threw a huge party at the Logandale Park. The park was flooded with irrigation water. Even the fire department came to help make sure that everyone got wet and had a great time. Wednesday night the rough winds forced movie night, normally held under the stars on the football field, indoors to the gym.

During the afternoon on Thursday, the Senior Class performed their talents at the Senior Talent Show. The talents included a mime, several singers, a piano guitar duet, a music video and a couple of dances. The student body was greatly entertained by the antics of their seniors.

MVHS Senior, Matt Johnson, is crowned with the Mr. M award at a Thursday night ceremony. That night was the annual Mr. M Competition. This year six seniors competed for the honor of representing MVHS as Mr. M. This beauty pageant created specifically for high school boys was a favorite event full of laughs. Brady Leavitt, Josh Witter, Brandon PeQueen, Matt Johnson, Nick DeLaFrance, and David Gourdin competed and entertained for two hours. The first part of a competition was the wardrobe competition. The outfits included snowboarding gear, pirate garb and even a Tom Selleck look-alike. David Gourdin, who impressed the judges with his Tom Selleck impersonation, won the wardrobe part of the competition.

The next contest was the strength competition. The boys competed in leg wrestling and “Sword Fighting.” These fierce competitions required both brawn and brain, as the contestants had to make it through a tournament-like test of strength. In the end Nick DeLaFrance was deemed the strongest contestant.

Next the contestants displayed their talents. This was the most entertaining part of the show, and included a magic show, a (sort of) hypnotist, a Johnny Cash rendition, and even a series of glow stick tricks. Brandon PeQueen won the competition after his hilarious, edited rendition of “A Boy Named Sue,” by Johnny Cash.

Finally the contestants had only one competition left, the interview. Each young man was asked four questions. These included, “What is your idea of a perfect date?” (Matt Johnson’s answer was May 12, 2016.) and “If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one item would you want to have?” Josh Witter said he’d have a freezer full of ice cream. “You’re gonna die anyway, you might as well enjoy life while you’ve got it.” Each contestant’s final question was “What does the M in Mr. M mean to you?” The most memorable answer was Brady Leavitt’s, “Brady. The ‘M’ is silent.” Leavitt won the interview competition.

The winner of the Mr. M competition was Matt Johnson. Johnson played his guitar and sang with is band during the talent part of the competition, and sported a wet-suit during the wardrobe competition. His personality and style clearly proclaimed him the 2008 Mr. M. After a week of hard work, the Student Council felt that M Week was a“big success,” according to Student Body President Nick DeLaFrance.

“Everyone had a lot of fun, it was just a great week.”
