No One Asked Me But…

by Dr. Larry Moses

No one asked me but…once upon a time there was a farm boy who found a goose that laid golden eggs. For many years when his family needed money the boy went into the barnyard and collected a golden egg.

The boy grew up and became greedy. He decided he did not have to wait for the goose to lay the golden eggs but that he would merely cut open the goose and take all of them at once. Besides a nice goose dinner would taste good. Not only did he find no eggs, the dinner wasn’t that good either. The American government and countries around the world are very much like that little boy. The American people have been the goose producing the golden eggs for everyone in the world. The world and the US government seem bent on killing the goose that lays the golden eggs and we can see the effects of this tragedy both at home and abroad.

Greedy oil producing countries in the Middle East see no harm in overcharging the American people for oil which is used to produce the food for the rest of the world. They state they are merely looking out for their own interests. Not only that but they are funneling many of their profits to terrorist organizations bent on cooking the golden goose. They do this knowing that the American people will continue to funnel food products into their non productive deserts.

American people have begun to use food products for fuel and they are now characterized as cruel and inhuman by the rest of the world. (The stupidity of this decision is a discussion for another day.) How dare we look out for the interest of America at the expense of the rest of the world?

But worse still is the attitude of many Americans. In an old Pogo cartoon (boy, I miss that comic strip) Pogo says, “We have met the enemy and they are us.” That is so true today. From eco-nuts who have been able to block the construction of refineries and drilling for oil to preachers who have decided that the “pigeons have come home to roost” as American citizens are massacred by terrorists, America does not lack for homegrown threats.

I must say, however, that it is great to live in country where a person can be stupid in public and not be arrested or killed. Try that in Iran Rev. Wright. America not only protects the Rev. Wrights but this writer’s ranting as well. God Bless America.

American manufacturers have moved companies out of the country not because they couldn’t make a profit in America but they could increase their profits by exploiting the workers in third world countries. We have suffered through Presidents and Congresses, both Democrat and Republican dominated, that have made unfavorable trade agreements for the profit of special interest groups. They have allowed the destruction of much of America’s manufacturing in the interest of improving the status of foreign countries.

This is the business equivalent of No Child Left Behind in education. It is no Country Left Behind. It has had basically the same effect; no country is left behind because no country is allowed to go ahead.

What we are doing is turning America into a third world country and allowing China and Russia to become the economic leaders. We seem much more concerned over the standard of living in Mexico, Canada, Ghana, Bangladesh, etc. than we are the standard of living for the American people.

The President recently addressed the gas price issue by stating that it was a supply and demand issue. Well, if that is true Mr. President let us take control of the supply by using United States oil. When oil prices reached $55 a barrel it became economically sound to begin to liquefy coal and shale. There are enough oil possibilities in the state of Wyoming alone to last the U.S. for over 200 years and we could surely, in that time, develop alternative fuels.

The money we are funneling to Middle Eastern terrorists could be spent right here in the United States. If we liquefy coal, there should be plenty of fuel. We would no longer need to liquefy corn. Not only is the liquefaction of corn causing a rise in food prices, it actually uses more fossil fuels to make than it is worth. Nancy Pelosi’s California will not be using coal for electricity after 2015 so there should be even more to use for gas.

We haven’t even talked about Anwar or off-shore drilling, all of which can be done nowadays with a minimal environmental disruption. (The oil companies desire to open these fields may well have more to do with the price of oil than supply and demand.) If it is the environmental disruption that bothers the eco-nuts, they should look at what solar panels and wind farms do to the environment.

We are busily talking ourselves into a depression, even though the stock market is up, unemployment down and none of the traditional signs used to mark a recession are in place. Fuel prices are the major problem we must resolve and it is time to quit allowing a vocal minority to control the future of this country. It is time to stop killing the golden goose and start pampering it. When America and the world come to understand this, we will all be better off.

No one asked me but… The Governor of the State of Nevada has filed for divorce. The grounds for the divorce are incompatibility. I would imagine things might be a bit incompatible in a marriage relation after some of the allegations that were highlighted during the last election. I don’t believe I have ever heard of a Governor getting a divorce while in office. I remember a President who survived a number of actions that for most would have lead to a divorce, but that is another story.

While the divorce is a tragic personal issue, what I find of public interest is that along with the papers filed was an administrative request asking the soon to be ex-First Lady to turn over the Governor’s mansion to the Governor. You might think that that would be an automatic. However, since she also stated that she plans to continue the duties of the First Lady and maybe she has a legitimate argument.

I was not aware a First Lady had any duties. I thought the First Lady’s job was to look good and keep the Governor out of trouble. While the governor is required by law to inhabit the Governor’s Mansion, the people of the state of Nevada must surely own it. This whole thing could get interesting. This is a community property state, so maybe the mansion will go to the governor’s wife. Maybe she will get the House and he will get the Senate. The Attorney General may be old enough to determine who he wants to live with. Maybe the Governor will get supervised visitation rights with the Secretary of State. Do you suppose they will divide the state parks equally? Who gets the limo?

Thought of the week…You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be. Admiral Jim Stockdale
