Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) seniors participated in Baccalaureate services on Sunday, June 1. Baccalaureate is a non-denominational religious service traditionally held for the graduating class.

Dr. Larry Moses was the featured speaker at this uplifting service. Throughout his speech Dr. Moses used humor to illustrate profound advice. For example he told the students they have the right to be angry about injustice and corrupt leaders. “You have the right to be angry, but not mean,” he said. “Mean people

Students of all faiths gathered on Sunday night for the annual Baccalaureate Service. This non-denominational service just for seniors was a well attended tradition on Sunday.

are like Slinky’s. They serve no purpose but it’s fun to watch them fall down stairs.”

He also offered serious counsel like, “Find out who you are, because until you do it’s hard to figure out where you are going.” and “The most important decision you will ever make will be who you will walk your life with. I have spent my life since my junior year with my best friend. That has made all the difference in my life. It’s also important to walk with Christ. In my hands a few loaves of bread and some fish is a couple of sandwiches. In his hands they fed thousands. It all depends on whose hands it’s in.”

After Dr. Moses’ remarks the Encore Choir sang a beautiful rendition of “The Prayer.” The Senior Class Officers, Jennifer Jack, Cody McCracken, Houston Costa and Kirk Bullock each took a few minutes. They talked about the Senior Classes accomplishments, spirit and unity, and then urged the class to move on and realize their dreams.

Marissa Paul, Michaela Coburn, Kaytie Cook, Cori Cook and Jennifer Jack then closed the meeting with a song called “Whenever You Remember.”

Student Council Adviser Charlie Cooper said that the Baccalaureate service here in Moapa Valley is unique. “We are the only school in the district who still has this service,” he said. “We rotate the responsibilities for the program throughout the different churches in the community, and we move back and forth between the St. John’s Catholic Church and the LDS Stake Center, because those are the two buildings big enough to hold all of us. It’s really a great thing.”
