Submitted June 25, 2008

July is the month to celebrate America, and the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery will feature an all-American theme in its gallery exhibit and brown bag presentation. The Sew Next Time Quilters will present “An American Tradition: Making Memories Through Quilting.” on Monday, July 1 at noon in the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery. The public is cordially invited to attend this free presentation, part of Virgin Valley Artists Association monthly series, “Everything Mixes with Art!”

The Sew Next Time Quilters are a group of Mesquite women who have met on Wednesdays for many years, stitching and visiting as they create their fabric masterpieces. Members have exhibited quilts at shows throughout Nevada and Utah. Their yearly exhibition during the Mesquite arts festival is legendary. Their fine needle work and inventive themes show a high degree of artistry.

On Tuesday, the Quilters will display several styles of quilts and fabric work, including Hawaiian quilting, wall hangings, and fabric artistry. They will give tips on developing a theme, selecting fabric, and other help for the novice quilter.

The July featured exhibit at the South Gallery is “Independence,” a themed display of watercolor and pottery. The entries in this exhibit are available for “people’s choice” voting for Best of Show in each medium. Everyone who visits the gallery may cast a ballot, selecting a favorite among the entries to be rewarded ribbons.

The Nevada Arts Council display, “Honest Horses,” continues in the North Gallery. This fine photo-graphic essay of Nevada’s wild horses is accompanied by passages of cowboy poetry. The Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery is located at 15 West Mesquite Blvd. It is a city-owned facility, staffed and operated by the Virgin Valley Artists Association.

The popular student summer art program starts July 10. This program is offered free of charge to students 8 to 14 years old. Details are available at the Gallery or online at www.mesquitefineartscenter.com.

For more information on the gallery, VVAA membership and its programs and exhibits, please call 346-1338 during gallery hours, or visit the gallery 10 am-4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.
