Local preschool teacher Margaret Humes has retired after spending the last 15 years working with the Classroom On Wheels Preschool (COW) in Overton.

Humes has always had a love for teaching. Before working with COW she taught Sunday School Classes at her church. She always enjoyed being around children and watching them learn and grow.

It wasn’t until after she started working with COW that Humes started taking classes working towards her degree. It took 2½ years but she did earn her Early Childhood Associates Degree and also go her CDA (Child Development Associates).

Shyanne O’Hara-Gregory and her grandma Margaret Humes spend time together at preschool. Humes has now retired after 15 years at the Classroom On Wheels Preschool.
Humes credits her co-teachers for her years of enjoyment. Amelia Ramos and Carol Cencer have been much appreciated friends and co-workers over the years. “They were great, I was blessed to have such good co-teachers,” she said.

The 3 – 5 year old kids were great to be around as well. “It has been fun watching them grow” said Humes. Humes has worked with so many valley kids that she has watched kids she taught as preschoolers graduate from high school.

COW is located on the Mack Lyon Middle School grounds. Humes has had junior high students that she taught in preschool comment that they want to come back to preschool. “That is always fun to hear,” she said.

Humes will miss working with the kids. “They still hug you at that age. I will miss the hugs,” she said.

COW CEO Camellia Williams hasn’t replaced Humes just yet. She is still working on hiring. Williams and her staff have enjoyed working with Humes. “We sure are going to miss her,” said Beverly Dabney, Executive Assistant to Williams.

A surprise retirement party was thrown for Humes at the office in Vegas. She was surprised with cake, pictures and a plaque of appreciation from COW.

Humes expressed her appreciation to Mack Lyon Middle School and their staff, “They were wonderful and always helpful,” said Humes.

What is next for Humes? If her home sells she and her husband will be relocating to California to care for her elderly mother.
