Ready, Set, Lift Off… Local kids had the opportunity to enjoy a trip to outer space last week. Actually, they didn’t have to travel as far as you might think. The Calvary Community Church Vacation Bible School (VBS) was held August 4-8. Kids in attendance traveled to “Cosmic City” and enjoyed five evenings filled with fun that was simply out of this world.

Mark Jobst lent his personality to the stage. He kept kids entertained and informed as to the days events. Church member Susie Fisk was in charge of getting things coordinated for the event but all members involved had a hand in pulling off this successful trip to outer space.

With more kids enrolled than expected, the Calvary Community Church was full of the noise of children and plenty of action for those five days. “Tour guides” had their hands full with their respective age groups.

Each group had their own special name for the week. The fifth and sixth grade age group were the “Silver Sonics”. Third and fourth graders were the “Orange Orions”. First and second graders were the “Aqua Astros”. The Kindergartners were the “Red Racers” and the Preschoolers, the “Purple Pulsars”.

Each day to start things off the entire group met and took care of group business. The kids had the opportunity to donate spare change into jars each day to work towards an end of week pool party. It was boys versus girls and we can happily report that each sex did a great job. So much money was raised that not only did they get their pool party but a cool treat as well.

During VBS kids were asked to bring a friend with them the next day. After the first day nearly 30 kids brought a friend. That was one lively group of kids. Those who brought a friend received a small prize from the toy chest.

Each day came with a new Cosmic Clue Quest and each day there was a new theme for the children. There was silly hat day, pajama day and inside out/backwards day. The kids had a fun time playing dress up each day. Not to mention the leaders who seemed to have an equally fun time dressing up with the kids.

Each group rotated through stations during the evening. The Craft Station also called Super Nova Supermart was a fun stop along the trip. Kids made space ships, cosmic rocks and balls, and picture frames. Photographs had been taken of each child as an astronaut to be placed into their frame.

The Theatre of the Galaxies was another fun stop. There the kids watch a Bible Drama play out each day learning valuable lessons. Wonder U was an educational and fun stop on the journey where kids performed science experiments.

There was also a fun music and games station in Asteroid Alley as well as snack time in the Shooting Star Drive Inn where the snack went along with the cosmic theme of the day.

At the conclusion of the week parents and families were invited to watch the end of week program and enjoy the much anticipated pool party held at the Overton Pool. “It has been really fun, the kids had a good time” stated Fisk. At the end of a busy week the members of the Calvary Community Church can be proud of what they accomplished.
