The 4-H Council held its 1st annual Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 12. This event was an effort to raise awareness of the programs available and welcome any new volunteers that are interested in joining the fun that 4-H has to offer.

Local 4-H Program Coordinator Lori Leas along with State Ambassadors and Council Members decided to try something new with an Ice Cream Social. “We are looking for volunteers in a variety of areas,” said Leas.

4-H Ambassadors Alyssa O’Toole, Krysta Millington, Kaley Sproul and soon-to-be Ambassador Calvin McMurray whip up ice cream at the 4-H Council’s 1st Annual Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 12.
Maggie McMurray and Lonnie and Alice Sproul currently make up the adult council so far. “Any 4-H leader can be on the council,” Leas explained. “Ideally we would like to have representation from every club who will work with the teen council.”

The teen council has many ideas for a bright future. Teen Ambassador Krysta Millington has envisioned some changes to take place in the Junior Livestock area. “I would like to see at least two kids from the Youth Council attending adult board meetings to provide feedback on the Junior Livestock, ” she explained.

4-H member Kenna McMurray jots down ideas for the upcoming year with 4-H at the 4-H Council’s 1st Annual Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 12. Leas is proud of the teens for taking such initiative. “I think it is great that the kids want to be a part of the decision making process,” she said. The group of teens has recently written and submitted their bylaws to state for approval. This process took them nearly three months, Leas said.

Additional ideas from the youth were shared and written down on a list. Ideas like workshops covering a variety of areas including junior gardening, record keeping, volunteer training, scrapbooking, horse and horseless camps, automotive, photography, rocketry, and home arts such as sewing and knitting. Activities such as camping, ice skating and hiking were also discussed amongst the group.

4-H member Kenna McMurray has been a member for the past four years and has shown animals in the fair for the past three years. She had the opportunity to attend a horse camp which she thought was well worth her time. “I learned how to care for horses and a lot about horse safety.” Stated McMurray.

In order for these great ideas to come to fruition volunteer are needed in many areas. The 4-H council will also be looking at fund raising within the community.

In addition to raising funds for activities and workshops, the kids are hoping to raise enough money to make the trip the Washington D.C. next year. This trip will cost approximately $1500 per child. The kids will have the opportunity to meet other teens from across the nation and participate in focus groups. They will even have the opportunity to meet with legislative leaders.

Those who are interested in volunteering to help the local 4-H group can contact Alice Sproul at 397-2771. You can also contact Lori Leas with any questions by calling 397-2604 or by emailing leasl@unce.unr.edu.
