Voters in Moapa Valley and across the state went to the polls to participate in Primary elections on Tuesday, August 12. Last week the Clark County Board of Commissioners certified the County Election Department’s official Statement of Votes. This document breaks down the results by precincts and allows analysis of just how residents in Moapa Valley voted.

Turnout for the Primary Election was moderately higher in the Moapa Valley region than it was in Clark County. Just under 800 Moapa Valley voters participated in the election which represented a turnout of about 20% of registered voters. The voter turnout for Clark County in the August 12 election was only about 15%.

In many of the primary races, Moapa Valley voters fell directly in line with the rest of Clark County and the election outcome was the same. But in a few cases, the outcomes would have been significantly different if Moapa Valley votes alone were considered.

In the race for US Congress District 3, the wishes of local voters ran parallel with those of the county. Local voters selected Congressman Jon Porter with 86% of the vote; only five percentage points higher than the rest of the county. Local Democrats voted for Dina Titus with 68% of the vote compared to 84% at the county level.

In the race for County Commission District A, local Republicans chose Brian Scroggins as their candidate with 54% of the vote. The local Democratic results differed from the county however in Dist. A. Steve Sisolak, who won the election with 66% of the vote, only received 47% of the local Democratic votes. Contender, Jeffrey White actually garnered a few more votes locally than Sisolak with 53%.

In the Democratic contest for County Commission District B, incumbent Tom Collins ran neck and neck with his contender Brent Howard in Moapa Valley votes. Collins took 53% of the local vote leaving Howard with 47%. But district-wide, Collins actually swept the primary with 77% of the vote.

Another local selection that differed from the final election result was in the race for District Court Department 10. In that race, David Rivers received the highest number of Moapa Valley votes, carrying 34% locally. But Rivers only ranked third in the overall election tally, losing his place on the General Election ballot to William Kephart and Jessie Walsh.

Another significant difference was in the District Court Department 25 race. Suzann Baucum received the most local votes in that race with 36%. But Baucum also didn’t make it to the General ballot. The final two in this race will be Kathleen Delaney and Susan Scann.

Logandale resident, Mathew Harter advanced to the general ballot by a very narrow margin in the overall race for Family Court Department N. He will appear on the November ballot with Gayle Beck-Nathan. But in the Moapa Valley alone, Harter swept the election carrying 41% of the local vote. Primary contender John Jensen also fared well locally in this race with 30% of the Moapa Valley vote. But he did not do well enough county-wide to advance to the general election.

The following are the official votes cast in the Primary Election in all Moapa and Moapa Valley precincts.
