What Great Suggestion?
To the Editor:
What ‘Great Suggestion’ are we talking about? In the letter entitled “A Great Suggestion” (Progress; Aug. 20, 2008) regarding the disposition of the Senior Center, I read at least three.

Quote #1: “…they consider renting the old Senior Center to the Cappalappa Family Resource Center for the same nominal fee afforded to the seniors.”

Quote #2: “…obtain the old Senior Center for the very nominal fee…”

And Quote #3: “…offering the Cappalappa Family Resource Center the Jim Boyles Senior Center.”

Regarding the last suggestion, who wouldn’t want to be the recipient of a million dollar facility? There are a number of organizations cajoling for just that.

This facility and the assets that have been accrued for years through the hard work and support of its members can continue to benefit our Seniors, just as Jim Boyle intended. We cannot offer too much for the seniors in our valley. And, while the new center is wonderful, there is more that can be done in the areas of added facilities, transportation and assistance.

Our accumulated assets, properly managed, can continue to grow and benefit future generations of seniors. Let us not allow this opportunity to slip through our fingers and into the wrong hands.

Part of Growing Up
To the Editor:
I would like to give a big ‘thank you’to all of the coaches and team members of the MVHS Football team. As a parent of an incoming freshman student, my son had the best time at “Boot Camp”.

I also wanted to say ‘thank you’to the fellow team members that gave my son a hair cut. You just saved me $30! My husband and I had been trying for months to get our son’s hair cut without success; he comes home from football camp with a “stylish new do”.

As he came into our front door & removed his hat, I laughed so hard, it woke the rest of the house. I then proceeded to grab my camera for some memorable pictures. My son thought it was hilarious and all in good fun.

Then he told me that there were some boys whose parents were irrate about the haircuts. They were so upset they called the school and threatened to take legal action.

Now, I understand that some of these boys may have modeling careers ahead of them. But to take legal action on something like this may not be teaching kids the right thing. In this day & age people are so quick to sue without even trying to solve the problem on their own through regular channels. Unless your sons hair will never grow back, let your kids be kids. I was not there that day at camp, but I firmly believe this was done all in fun. I would not agree with this if the boys were chased, run down, held down and shaved. But to my understanding this was not the case. There were only a few players that stepped up and got a new hair cut, less than 10 out of…how many players? The boys who didn’t want a haircut, didn’t get one.

On a closing note, my son not only came home with a new do, but came home wiser and part of a true team. This is part of growing up, and if we don’t let our kids grow up without falling, they will always be under our apron, and never experience life for themselves.
