MVHS Booster Club Looking Forward To A Great Year

The Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) Booster Club is ready for the ’08-’09 school year. This organization is volunteer based and is focused on raising and generating funds to put back into high school activities.

The Boosters annual Membership Drive kicked off at the first home football game which took place on Friday night against Fernley. “We had memberships before the drive ever started,” explained Booster Club President Brady Lamping.

Lamping will be serving as President for her last year and has been involved in the Booster Club longer than she can recall. Lamping explained that the Booster Club is much more than people realize.

Booster Club volunteer Cindy McMurray mans the membership table at the first home game of the season as the Moapa Valley Pirates take on Fernley Friday, August 29, 2008.
For a cost of only $15 anyone can join the Boosters as a member for the year. As a member you receive a free dinner at the kickoff BBQ dinner which will be held at the home game against Boulder City on October 3. Your name is entered into drawings for great prizes which are given out at home football and basketball games. Also as a parent or guardian of a MVHS student you make that student eligible to receive a Booster Club Scholarship. Last but not least, you get to be part of a great organization and participate in fun volunteer activities throughout the year.

Last year the Booster Club was able to award ten students with $500 Scholarships each. The number of scholarships given each year depends on the funds raised. In order to raise money for the scholarships the Boosters count on high membership numbers. That money is what they then use to issue the scholarships.

Sales from concession stands is a big money maker for the Boosters. Volunteers can be found at home football and basketball games serving up treats to hungry fans. Another money maker is clothing and other items which are sold at home games. Hoodies, shirts, car flags, car decals, and other fun accessories are a few of the items sold by Boosters.

With funds raised the Boosters are able to assist many programs within the high school. Booster Treasurer Richard Jones keeps track of all finances and reports at meetings. Jones doesn’t currently have any kids attending MVHS but loves his volunteer job. “He takes it very seriously and does a great job with money,” explained Richard’s wife Shelley Jones.

The Booster Club will have their membership table set up at the next two home games. As always the Moapa Valley Rotary Club will be at all home football games cooking up dinner for attendees.

“The Rotary is just fantastic” said Lamping. “They donate all money back to the Booster Club, they are a just great.”.

If you are interested in becoming a Booster Club member but can’t make it to the next few home games you can contact Richard Jones at 397-8865.
