Pirate Tennis Prepared To Hold Court

In years past, the Boy’s and Girl’s tennis teams at Moapa Valley High School have had to prepare for their season on old, dilapidated, cracked green tennis courts. This year, it is hoped that the brand-new Pirate Tennis Facility will usher in a new era of Pirate Tennis.

After several years of service, the old courts at MVHS no longer were up to standards at the end of last season. Over the summer, the MVHS Athletic Department had the courts

replaced with a blue and gold court surface and the addition of two extra courts to make a grand total of eight courts at the Pirate Tennis Facility.

In his second year at the helm of Pirate Tennis, Head Coach Sidney Bounds is hoping that this year will be a return to glory for Moapa Valley. After several years where the Pirates stayed at or near the top of the Northeast Division, Moapa Valley experienced a rebuilding season last year. Now the Pirates are figuring to continue their climb back to the top.

“It’s early to tell for this season how good we’re going to be,” Bounds said. “We didn’t lose alot of people and we have some strengths with several of our upperclassmen playing well.”

Pirate Tennis had 25 kids come out for the team. Over the past few weeks, these athletes have been focusing on volley skills, getting their serves up to speed, and preparing themselves with drills which strengthen their conditioning regimen.

On the other side of the courts, Donna Swanson has been busy preparing the Lady Pirates for play this season. She has been using a strenuous program of running, conditioning, and skill training to get the team prepared for the tough season which awaits them.
With several top schools in the picture, including Canyon Springs in Las Vegas, Lady Pirate tennis is going to be an event to watch this fall. “We’ve worked hard this year and we are going to do well. We’re excited for the season and are hoping to become another winning program for Moapa Valley fans to support,” said senior Erin Williams.
