It’s Called ‘Progress’
To the Editor:
The Moapa Valley Progress ran a Letter to the Editor (Not On My Watch – September 10 edition). After reading this letter I pictured the writer in a straw hat, overalls and a twig in his mouth wondering if the rain will hurt the rhubarb. It seems this person’s watch should have ended in the 1800s, a more simple time where the ever-increasing need and demand for energy was nonexistent.

Ponder the thought of what would have happened to small towns like Denver, Colorado; Los Angeles, California; and yes, even Salt Lake City, Utah, if the people had closed minds and stated “Look how ugly all those steel rails look and go on for miles. I don’t want that ugly smelly thing coming through my town!”

It is called PROGRESS!! It is coming at us at the speed of time and you can’t stop it. We can either embrace it and work with it to make our lives better or we could stick our heads in the sand and hope it goes away.

The benefits of the solar power plant being proposed nearby on the Mormon Mesa greatly outweigh the eyesore the facility would cause to the Mesa. The hundreds of jobs it would create; many more than, let us say, Lin’s for example.

In the construction phase it would employ Heavy Equipment Operators, Iron Workers, Electricians, Laborers and so on. All of these workers would buy gas, need to eat, buy groceries and some may even rent or buy a place to live in our Valley.

In the completed phase, the power plant would employ Administrative Personnel, Grounds Keepers, Maintenance Personnel, Secretaries and so on. Some of these people just might come from our town.

A power plant like the one proposed also has environmental benefits compared to the now existing alternative technology: coal burning; and let’s not even talk about a nuclear power plant on Mormon Mesa.

We as the human race have polluted this world almost to the point of no return. A power plant like this one may be a step in the right direction. Remember you or I may not live long enough to see the environmental benefits that a power plant like this will do. If the human race is still here our future generations just might.

The next time you turn on your light, start your truck and even put your pants on, remember that these were all made in an undesirable eye sore of a factory in someone else’s backyard.

It is called PROGRESS! Welcome to the 21st century.
