Perkins Elementary School third grade students have been busy learning dances, songs, and stories for their Thanksgiving Program. The program took place on Tuesday, November 25.

Third grade teachers Mrs. Lillian Parashonts and Mrs. Linda Bush taught students everything they needed to put on one great program. The program included a great variety of story telling, ritualistic dances and song.

Starting things off for the program was a song, “Go My Son”, to which the children performed sign language. This song taught the children how to succeed in life.

Perkins Elementary School 3rd Graders performed a Potato Dance for their school on Tuesday, November 25. This couple was able to hold on to their potato through the entire dance.
Next it was explained that in the movies the Indians wear feathers for a reason, not just a cool fashion statement. A Native American Social Dance was performed and a story told explaining that an Eagle Feather is a high honor with much significance. “The feather means that God is watching over you,” explained a student.
Perkins Elementary School 3rd Grade teacher Mrs. Lillian Parashonts partakes in the “Round Dance” during a Thanksgiving Program on Tuesday, November 25, 2008. The kids performed a Two Step Snake Dance that took them around the audience. They then told a story about a baby rattlesnake’s tail. Another story told was “Coyote Steals The Blanket” which talked about a trickster coyote from an old Indian Legend.

Another story told was titled “Little Grunt and the Big Egg”, this story was a funny one that had the audience laughing. The kids each had parts in the tales and did a great job with their story telling.

The Potato Dance was a great crowd pleaser. Both young and old enjoyed this dance as the students were paired up boy and girl. The couple placed a potato between their foreheads and let go. The pressure between them kept the potato in place and they did a dance. If their potato dropped the couples would sit down. Three couples managed to keep their potato in place throughout the entire song.

Finishing off the program was the “Balloon Story” which gave a great message to the children. This story explained that it is what is inside that makes the balloon fly, just like it is with us.

“What your mind believes, you can achieve,” read a student at the conclusion of the story. The whole third grade class then recited “If we believe in ourselves and have a dream, we can be whatever we want to be”.

The program concluded as the children signed to the song I Believe I Can Fly.
