No One Asked Me But…

No One Asked Me But…

No one asked me but… I thought maybe there would be a chance to replace Senator Harry Reid in 2010. I hear only mumbling and grumbling from the people here at home. But this expectation took a couple of major hits recently. The first is the popularity of Barack Obama, almost to the level of a rock star. Unless Obama’s popularity slows down by 2010, it will be hard for any Republican to get elected. If indeed his policies seem to stem the economic debacle we are now in, there will probably be no Republican safe in America.

The second issue is two major Republican political actions groups that have targeted Senator Reid in hopes of bringing him down. The Legacy PAC is a national effort founded by supporters of Ronald Reagan that hopes to raise millions of dollars to point out the weaknesses of Senator Reid to his constituency in Nevada. This group headquarters in California and plans to raise money on both coasts to wage the campaign against Senator Reid. The other group is The America Future Fund based in Iowa.

I would be ecstatic to see Harry defeated. However, I really don’t care to have Californians or Iowans interfering in the politics of Nevada. Both of these groups targeted President Obama for defeat in the presidential election. How did that work out?

It is bad enough that every time we turn around we find our politicians copying the mistakes of our neighbor to the west. Californians and Mid-west conservatives now want to dictate who we elect to represent us.

It might be more effective if the Republican Party was to find and present a viable candidate. One must wonder where the Republicans are going to find a formidable foe to run against Harry. Before the last Presidential election one might think this is Nevada and an abundance of Republican candidates can be found to run against a Senator who has taken on the tapestry of East and West Coast liberals. But this last election certainly indicated Nevada is no longer a bastion of Republican conservatism.

Before anything else happens the Republican Party must pick itself up from the beating it took in the last election. Had the election been a prize fight it would have been stopped. I do not believe I have ever seen such a dismantling of a party in a single election.

There may be a legitimate question as to whether or not the Republican Party can recover. The Nevada Republican Party has less than two years to get itself back together and become viable in time to challenge Senator Reid or we will be looking at six more years of Harry.

No one asked me but… Do you remember the ad on TV a few years back where a little old lady went into a fast food restaurant and ordered a hamburger. When she got it she lifted up the bun and shouted, “Where’s the beef?”

As one looks at the Obama Cabinet one might well shout, “Where’s the change?”

A prime example of Washington business as usual is the approval of President Obama’s Secretary of the Treasury. Have you checked out President Obama’s choice, Tim Geithner? Mr. Geithner will be in charge of taxes for the Obama administration. We can only hope he does better with the national taxes than he did with his own.

You and I sweat out our taxes each year hoping agents from the IRS will not swoop down and take our firstborn for some minute mistake in our return.

I am glad to see that the government has become more benevolent in its enforcement of the federal tax laws. They have forgiven Mr. Geithner of some $34,000 dollars he failed to pay over four years.

Mr. Geithner said it was a careless mistake that could have been avoided. He further asserted the tax evasion was unintentional. He admitted that he knew he had incorrectly filed his taxes for four years. However, since statutes of limitations only required him to make good on two of those years, that was all he was willing to do.

The government didn’t catch him soon enough; therefore, instead of paying all his delinquent taxes, he would pay for only two years.

I find it interesting that his employer actually gave him the money to pay his taxes and he signed an agreement that he would use the money to pay the taxes. I never had an employer give me money to pay my taxes —did you? However, he didn’t even use the money specifically set aside to pay the taxes to pay the taxes. This would seem more than a careless mistake to me. Another question might be, was this money not income and should it not to have been taxed?

We won’t bother to talk about the illegal alien he had working as a domestic.

But I ask again where is the change? I guess the major change was when Mr. Geithner’s confirmation was announced on CBS, they didn’t find it necessary to mention either his tax evasion or the illegal alien domestic.

I have a feeling if this had been a Bush appointment, we not only would have been told about the tax evasion but we would be on a first name basis with the illegal alien domestic.
