What can you do with 800 cups of rootbeer and 800 scoops of vanilla ice cream? Rootbeer floats of course! Darin Leach, Bradley Whiting and Carol Jolley of Lin’s Marketplace know this all too well. Last week they spent two afternoons serving up over 800 rootbeer floats to local school children as part of a reward for participating in the School Cents program.

On an annual basis Lin’s Market is allotted $25,000 to be used three times a year for the School Cents program. This makes $8333 available at a time for 23 participating schools.

Darin Leach of Lin’s, Principal Ken Paul and Bradley Whiting of Lin’s at Perkins Elementary on Wednesday, March 11. Leach presents Paul with a $1000 check for Perkins Elementary as part of the School Cents program.
This money is made available for a total of five Lin’s stores. Children collect their Lin’s receipts and turn them into the school of their choice. Each week all four local schools keep track of the receipts collected and turn in their numbers to Lin’s. Each school qualifies for a certain amount of money up to $1000 depending on the amount of receipts turned in on behalf of their school.

This go around the local schools earned one-third of the money available out of the 23 schools. Bowler Elementary earned their maximum allowed with $1,000 as did Perkins Elementary earning $1,000 with Moapa Valley High school earning $660 and Mack Lyon Middle School earning $350.

“The top three schools were right here in Moapa Valley,” stated Leach.

Leach presented checks to all four schools last week and gave an extra special treat to the elementary school students in the way of rootbeer floats. Monday, March 9 was Bowler’s turn and the crew from Lin’s along with the Bowler office staff served up over 600 rootbeer floats.

On Wednesday, March 11, the Lin’s crew made their way to Perkins Elementary and served up over 200 rootbeer floats. “It is pretty amazing that this small school was able to earn the maximum of $1000,” said Leach.

Pepsi was kind enough to donate all of the rootbeer and Blue Bunny was generous in donating all of the ice cream for both schools. The kids certainly enjoyed their rootbeer floats.

Lin’s Marketplace continually displays community support especially when it comes to the children in the community.

If you are interested in donating your receipts to a local school you can do so at Lin’s in any of the four drop off points at the front of the store where the shopping carts are parked.
