About 50 boys along with their leaders began arriving at the OWMA on Friday afternoon. After a brief opening ceremony, dinner was served. They then were divided into groups that attended a series of workshops.
The workshops had a common theme of comparing the boys development to the development of medieval knights. Activities included a jousting practice, an obstacle course and an opportunity to try on a suit of real armor. Each workshop focused on ways that the boys could use the values of Scouting to better equip themselves for the dangers and struggles they will face in life. After a brief evening ceremony, the groups were released to return to their campsites. A few actually went to bed. But for most, the night’s fun was just beginning. An early morning assembly gathered the scouts and their leaders at 7:00 a.m. Then they began another set of rotation workshops learning more hands-on skills. These included first aid, knot tying, tying lashings, using compasses and maps and, of course, the very useful skill of throwing knives and axes. The day ended with a “Final Battle” where the skills that the boys had learned throughout the campout were put to the test. |
