Moapa Tribal Community held its first annual “Fun Day” on Saturday, May 16. The day began with a three mile walk and ended with a beautiful fireworks display; and had plenty of excitement in the middle.

The morning started early with a Poker Walk/Run. Nearly 20 early birds gathered to take part in a three mile walk. The youngest was a baby pushed in a stroller and the oldest was 65 years young.

As the morning continued a small group of children had a great time with the GPS Treasure Hunt. Participants traveled all over the Reservation to different locations on the hunt for treasure.

Basketballs were then brought out the for an exciting 3-point contest. The competition ended with a three way tie. A free throw shoot out was then held to determine the champion. Ten year old Donovan Tafua emerged victorious. This excited young man earned a Wal-Mart gift card.

The parade began at 11:00 a.m. As April is Child Abuse Awareness Month the parade was themed the Child Abuse/Domestic Violence Awareness Parade. Reservation Police as well as a variety of floats made up the parade.

The brightest of all floats was sponsored by the Moapa Tribal Offices which sported a large boot. The sign on the float read: “Boot Child Abuse out of our Community”.

Additional activities took place throughout the day. A bounce house was available for the kids to enjoy. A homemade salsa contest tempted the taste buds. And a melon eating contest provided cool refreshment.

In the evening, a pot luck dinner was held with hotdogs and hamburgers provided. A community talent show brought out some lively acts. And a tug of war tested the strength of attendees. The evening concluded with a bright fireworks display.
