Third grade students from Bowler Elementary performed Chautauqua reports last week for parents and fellow classmates. A few students from each class were chosen to perform their reports once again in front of the entire fourth grade class. This assembly was held on Thursday, May 21.

Chautauqua reports highlight heroes in history. Each student had the opportunity to choose a hero to learn about. They then presented an oral report on the subject.

All third grade students took the stage to perform a song together at the direction of music teacher Trish Anderson. Anderson had taught the children to use sign language with the song. The kids did a great job signing about

A total of twelve students took the stage one by one, dressed in character to give their oral reports. Kendra Edgett performed as Laura Ingalls Wilder; Lacey Johnson as Eleanor Roosevelt; Alexis Cisneros as Mary McCleod Bethune; Bailey Bunker as Florence Nightingale; Hailee Heiselbetz as Princess Diana; Trinity Conner as Jane Adams; and Nikelle Young as Elizabeth Blackwell. For the boys there was Hristo Dahlke as his great-grandfather Elmo Peterson; Jacob Schlaf as Henry Ford; McKay Raban as Thomas Edison; Cole Keller as Ronald Reagan; and Josh Lyon as Milton Hershey.

All students did an outstanding job delivering their reports. Some interesting facts were handed out during the speeches including how Henry Ford tested his engine in the kitchen sink. Thomas Edison only attended public school for three months being home-schooled the rest of his years. Mary McCleod Bethune used blueberries as ink and sticks for pencils in the school she started for black students in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Hristo Dahlke gave a more personal report on his great grandfather Elmo Peterson. Peterson was in the U.S. Marine Corp, “his story is still told in military schools today,” said Hristo. He then told the story of how his great grandfather traveled to Korea in 1950 to serve in the middle of winter. Hristo explained that it was so cold that the food, water, medicine and even the guns all froze. Hristo proudly explained that his great grandfather earned the Silver Star for bravery as well as two Purple Hearts for battle wounds.
