Local Cub Scouts enjoyed three days as “Castaway Cubs” during the 2009 Cub Scout Day Camp held June 4-6. A variety of activities took place at the Adams Ranch, the Logandale LDS Stake Center, and the Logandale Sports Complex. This year’s theme provided the kids with plenty of opportunity to play pirates.

The fun began as soon as school ended

on Thursday. Unfortunately, the wind began then as well. But that didn’t stop the scouts. Day Camp coordinator Suzanne Garlick made sure everything ran according to schedule.

The boys were split into groups according to their age, the various sets of groups then rotated through different stations each day so that each group was able to experience every activity over the course of the three days.

During their time at the Adams Ranch the scouts learned about fishing safety and were provided with pointers from leaders as well as older scouts. The boys were taught fishing skills like setting the bob and getting the hook tied to the line.

Local Cub Scouts enjoy Day Camp treats as they learn how to make a campfire snack on Friday, June 5, 2009. Also here the kids had the opportunity to make their own ice cream, learned how to tie a variety of knots, and even got to venture out on a short hike and learn about local plant life.

The favorite activity at the Adams Ranch was pool time. The scouts were instructed on swimming safety and taught a few life saving skills in and around the water.

The Logandale Sports Complex offered another variety of great activities. Soccer, snacks, bb guns, leatherwork, and archery were all part of the fun. At the bb gun and archery stations the boys shot at targets and were taught about safety measures.

At the Logandale Stake Center the kids worked on crafts, wood, dance, and first aid. As pirates it was only fitting that the boys build treasure boxes out of wood. The scouts learned how to use a hammer, screw driver, and saw to create that perfect treasure box. During dance lesson the boys were taught moves only fitting to a pirate. During the art stations the kids learned about freehand sketching and color schemes.

On Saturday all scouts and their leaders gathered at the Stake Center for the final Day Camp ceremonies.
