State Senator Warren Hardy resigned his seat in the Legislature on Tuesday, June 16, in order to focus on lobbying work for the construction trade.

A two term senator, Hardy also serves as president of the Associated Builders and Contractors. With the upheaval in the construction industry, the group is aiming to save money by making Hardy its main lobbyist at the State Legislature rather than contracting with others to do it.

“I’m a victim of the economy, I’m afraid,” Hardy said. “I have to put feeding my family ahead of the Senate seat.”

Hardy was first elected to the Assembly in 1990 and then to the Senate in 2003. Previous to that he worked as a government affairs consultant in his own lobbying firm for 10 years.

Assemblyman Joe Hardy (R-Boulder City) plans to run for the seat in 2010. The two Hardys are not related. Warren Hardy said that he is endorsing Joe Hardy to replace him.

Hardy submitted his resignation to Gov. Jim Gibbons last week. No replacement is likely to be named unless a special session of the Legislature is called between now and the 2010 election.
