The 1st Annual Muddy River Track & Field Camp was held at the Moapa Valley High School track on June 24- 26. Nearly 50 kids ages kindergarten through 9th grade attended this three day camp.

MVHS Track coach Shane Hickman along with fellow coaches Bill Collup, Jeff Keel and Rick Bush took the camp attendees through a variety of activities during the camp.

Also lending a hand at camp was Brooke Bledsoe. Bledsoe recently accepted the position of Pirate Motion Dance Team Coach and is currently serving as the 2009 Mrs. Nevada International. “Getting involved in this camp goes right along with my pageant platform and this is something I enjoy,” she explained.

On the first day the kids were split up into three age groups. The focus was proper stretching and the techniques associated with getting the best stretch possible. The campers were taught how to start from a running block and worked on leg and arm movements and participated in a variety of agility drills.

“A lot of kids don’t know how to properly swing their arms,” stated Hickman,”We showed them how”.

The kids also got to try out hurdles on day one which seemed to be a favorite of many attendees. The lowest of low hurdles were set up in the first three lanes allowing the taller kids to try them out. The kids in the additional lanes would eventually swerve over behind the other runners to try out the hurdles proving that height wasn’t going to stop them.

Day two gave the kids a taste of the”Field”. After participating in warm ups as a large group the kids split into their smaller groups for a round robin morning of activities.

One group focused on the long and triple jump area. Coach Keel explained technique for each of the jumps and gave the kids an opportunity to test their jumping skills.

Coach Bush and Coach Collup spent time with their groups at the high jump area.

On the final day of camp the kids got to participate in relay races. First the group got in a good stretch and then the fun began. After working hard during the relay races the kids had the chance to cool down in the sprinklers before enjoying a hot dog lunch cooked up by the coaches.

All participants received a medal for participation as well as a super cool camp t-shirt.
