The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is holding their Kids Summer Reading Program through July 31. This year the program is called “Be Creative at Your Library”.

The Moapa Valley Library held a kick off celebration on July 24 to tell kids more about this year’s program. In order to get the word out they brought in expert entertainer, DJ Tony.

For the past 19 years DJ Tony has been entertaining the young and old at parties and other various events.

He is no stranger to the Clark County Library system having done many programs for Libraries in Las Vegas over the years.

DJ Tony isn’t only a disc jockey. He explained that he has been a fireman for the Clark County Fire Department for the past 18 years . Co-workers joke that being a fireman is actually his second job.

This is DJ Tony’s first year making an appearance in Moapa Valley. The 30 some children that were in attendance on Wednesday had a treat like no other. Not only did they learn all about the Summer Reading Program, they had a great time learning about the different things they could do and find and learn at their local Library. The kids even got to enjoy some time dancing, singing, participating in trivia and a hula hoop contest.

Caressa Solis makes a fish face at the direction of DJ Tony during the Library Summer Reading Program Kickoff held Wednesday, June 24, 2009. DJ Tony explained to kids and parents that this year’s reading program is free, as always, and invites children to share reading time together with their families, enjoy programs and earn prizes.

To join the program you can visit your local Library and pick up a reading log or visit www.lvccld.org to download and print your own copy.

For every five books or hours of reading you get to select a prize from the Library treasure chest. Then after every additional five you get to pick another prize until you reach 20. After you have read 20 hours or 20 books you will earn a gold medal and even be entered in the grand prize drawing for a chance to win a $50 gift card from Borders Books. There will be a winner from each of the 24 Libraries in the Clark County area.

After DJ Tony explained all of the particulars to the kids and their parents he expressed the importance of having a library card. “This card is a credit card to your future,” he said.
DJ Tony asked the kids to list the things they could do in their Library and received a great handful of answers including reading, listening to music, looking at art, use of a computer, check out movies, read magazines, work on puzzles, do homework in a quiet environment and best of all attend great programs like this one.

The next great program scheduled at the Moapa Valley Library will be a magic show featuring The Magic of Tony Daniels. The show will take place on Monday, July 13 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
