MV Volunteers Plan For The 4th

MV Volunteers Plan For The 4th
Moapa Valley Progress
Published July 1, 2009

Final efforts are being made this week in preparation for the Moapa Valley 4th of July Celebration to be held on Saturday at the Logandale Fairgrounds. Members of the volunteer 4th of July committee last week to coordinate their efforts.

Committee Chairwoman, Jacqulyn Pray, reported that most of the fundraising had been done to pay for this year’s fireworks show. “It has been a tough year for

local businesses,” Pray said. “Fundraising has been slow going.”

Pray said that the fundraising efforts have been a struggle this year. She had begun to worry about having to scale back on the community fireworks display. But then two local companies made substantial donations that dispelled those worries. “The Moapa Valley Federal Credit Union and the Moapa Valley Telephone Company really came through for us in a tough year,” Pray said. “Thanks to them, we won’t have to cut back significantly on the community fireworks display.”

Pray said that there is a little more than $2,000 still to raise before it is all done. “We are out of the woods but are still not completely there,” she said. She encourages people in the community to continue to make donations to the cause. Donation jars are placed in many of the local stores and restaurants. This year’s celebration T-shirts are also available for purchase at Books, Etc.in Overton.

This year’s July 4th events will be centered around the theme of “Voices of Liberty”. The day’s events will begin with a Flag Raising ceremony at 7:00 a.m. by local veterans groups. This will be followed by a community Breakfast provided by the Moapa Valley Rotary Club and Meadow Gold dairies.

Kids fun begins at 9:00 a.m. with a candy surprise. “Unfortunately, there won’t be a candy drop from the ultra-light aircraft as we have done in years past,” Pray said. “But we have something special planned for the kids all the same.”

After that, the morning activities will begin. Water games for kids will begin at 9:30 and are sponsored by Clark County Parks and Recreation.

Volunteer firefighters from stations 72, 73 and 74 will stage their traditional water fight on the lawn at 10:30. The morning’s festivities will then end with a Watermelon Bust sponsored by the Overton Senior Center.

This year, local families will have additional community activities to enjoy during the heat of the afternoon. Parks and Rec will be opening the community pools for free family swimming between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on July 4. In addition, the Pioneer Theatre in Overton will present a special matinee screening of “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” at 2:00 p.m. with special admission of $3.50 per person (a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the 4th of July celebration).

The evening festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds with a flag retreat ceremony. At 7:00 p.m. the doors to the Fine Arts Building will be opened for a BBQ dinner provided by the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce. A 4th of July program will begin on the stage at 8:30 p.m. featuring Calvin McMurray as Master of Ceremonies. Musical selections will be performed by local youth singers. Community service awards will also be presented.

The evening will end with the grand finale of the community fireworks display beginning at around 9:15 p.m.
