‘Celebration Of Life’ Held For Local Hero

A ‘Celebration of Life’ was held on Wednesday, July 8 in honor of the late Ray Otero. Otero passed away on July 4 at the age of 87. “We wanted to hold this celebration of life for close friends and my family here at Station 73,” explained his son Mike Otero, who is a volunteer firefighter. The gathering took place at Fire Station 73 in Logandale.

All of the men and women on Station 73 along with many friends and family gathered to celebrate Ray’s life.

In addition were the men and women of American Legion Post 75 and VFW Post 8336.

Ray Otero had a decorated past having earned the Silver Star and Bronze Star, along with many other decorations throughout his years. He served in both WWII and the Korean War.

Chaplin David Fox offered a prayer which was followed by an additional prayer offered by Ray’s grandson, Trace Otero. Fox then presented Ray’s son Mike with a United States Flag. Mike spoke for a moment about his late father explaining that even in his final days his sense of humor remained intact.

Attendees were invited to gather outside where a 21-gun salute was presented. The empty shells were collected and given to the family as a memento.

Mike’s wife Kim spoke to attendees and expressed the family’s thanks for all of the caring words and gestures shown by friends and family and thanked all for attending.

Jason Zerkle offered a blessing for the food and attendees enjoyed a buffet of items and visited with each other remembering Ray’s life.
