The 4-H Club held a regional training for Youth Summer Camp Counselors in Logandale on Monday, July 13. The training session was held to prepare youth leaders to be counselors in the 4-H Summer Camp which will be held next month at Lake Tahoe.

Ten youth attended the training: three from Moapa Valley and seven from the Las Vegas area. “Some of the kids had never been out here in the rural area,”said local 4-H coordinator Lori

The training began early on the Archery range at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension campus in Logandale. The youth leaders were taught a series of lessons in archery range safety. During the morning the youth also attended training classes instructing them on the details of being camp counselors.

In the afternoon, the group went canoeing at the Bowman Reservoir. Logandale resident Corey Dalley gave the trainees a hands-on session in canoeing and water safety.

“Being in a canoe was a first time experience for some of these kids,”said Leas. “We had planned, as part of the training, to have them capsize their canoes and then bring them back in. But one of them capsized just as soon as they got off of the shore. So we got that part of the training out of the way early.”

The training was to prepare the youth to be camp counselors at a 4-H summer camp in Lake Tahoe next month. Leas explained that the day of training was a valuable rural experience for the youth leaders. “It is good to get them out into the rural areas where they don’t come very often,”she said. “It is here that they can use a lot of the skills and concepts that they have been trained for and will have to use at camp.”

The 4-H Summer Camp will be held August 17-21. Spots are still available for kids to attend the camp. Those interested can call the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office at 397-2604 to register.
