Moapa Valley students returned to school on Monday August 24. Local classrooms were once again flooded with nervous and smiling children equipped with new backpacks, pencils, notebooks and binders.

Classes began at 7:00 a.m. for students at Moapa Valley High School. Preliminary enrollment numbers showed that 595 students registered for the upcoming school year at the high

school. That was down slightly from about 620 students enrolled last year.

Still, it was better than school officials had expected. “We thought that it would be a lot lower than it is,” said MVHS Registrar Louise Culler. “It ended up being better than we thought.”

Students at Mack Lyon Middle School began their first day at 7:30 a.m. with an assembly in the school gym. Students were treated to performances from the school cheerleading and dance teams and viewed a slide presentation depicting fun school activities from last year. Students were also introduced to teachers and staff. Finally, all students were issued their school spirit t-shirts which they are encouraged to wear every Friday throughout the school year.

Enrollment at Mack Lyon stayed essentially flat from last year. Preliminary numbers indicated that 450 students are enrolled this year. In 2008, that number was 444.

The school year’s first Morning Muster ceremony at Grant Bowler Elementary started right on time at 8:50 a.m.. Mr. Eric Ogren, opened the Muster with a welcome. Ogren asked that all hats be removed as he proceeded to remove his own cowboy hat. He lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance that followed with a pin dropping 30 seconds of silence.

The kids got some entertainment with the introduction of Paul Blart, played by the PTA’s 2nd Vice President, Joe Perez. Watching him balance on two motorized wheels had the kids mesmerized.

School Principal Shawna Jessen gave a short welcome to all who came. Jessen stated that the first day would be focused on reviewing the school rules.

Jessen recognized teachers for recent successes. “I want to celebrate the teachers and what they have achieved with the YPN math,” said Jessen. “This year we are focusing on reading enrichment.”

Bowler 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Brooks, welcomes her students on the first day of class on Monday, August 24. Jessen also recognized parents for their strong tradition of support in the school. “It moves me at the turnout of parents, grandparent and others who come to support the kids. That’s what makes Grant M. Bowler have the best students.”

Bowler has 668 students registered for school this year. This was down by about 20 students from the previous year but was in line with what school officials had projected.

At Ute Perkins Elementary the first day of classes was cheerful. Principal Ken Paul said that there were far less tears on the first

day than in years past. He attributed that to to the new theme for the school this year “Team”.

With the help of the teachers and staff Ute V. Perkins opening ceremony “Teamwork” was a hit.Mr. Dasal the music/art teacher worked with the teachers and staff to come up with a musical that included teachers, administrative staff and students. The goal was to show that even though all of the musical instruments are different, when they work together as a team they can become like a beautiful piece of music.

Attendance on the first day of school was 191 students. Currently enrolled there are 25 early childhood students, 38 kindergarten students, 28 first grade students, 20 second grade students, 22 third grade students, 28 fourth grade students and 27 fifth grade students.

The kindergarten class was given a tour of the school this morning, their tour included a meet and greet with Mr. Paul in his office. The boys on the tour were more excited about meeting Mr. Paul’s Halloween skeleton than meeting Mr. Paul and a few of the girls took a moment to watch the skeleton do a little dance.
