The Girl Scouts of Frontier Council held an annual Camporee on Friday and Saturday at the Clark County Fair Grounds in Logandale. This year’s theme was “Camp-O-Green; Camporee is Going Green!” Girl Scouts from grades K-12 participated in activities relating to recycling, going green; endanger animals, rain forest and the species that live in the rain forest.

On Friday evening, September 25, Girl Scouts from all over Southern Nevada pitched their tents at the fairgrounds. They decorated their campsites to represent the animals and foliage that lives in a rain forest climate. The opening ceremony was filled with Girl Scout songs and campfires.

On Saturday morning, young the Brownie Girl Scouts got an early start by heading over to Moapa to visit the Roos n More zoo. The girls spent two hours touring the zoo. The girls could not get enough of the hands-on interaction with the animals.

Carolyn Wassell, President of the Girl Scout Frontier Council) presents a Medal of Honor to Rachel Dean at the closing ceremonies of the Girl Scout Camporee. Dean was recognized for saving the life of a drowning girl last summer. One of the favorite attractions was the baby joeys. Little Hannah from Troop 67 was very afraid of all the animals. But when she saw the little joeys her heart melted and she even held one of the babies.

After the tour the Brownies learned how the rain forest is being destroyed and why some of the animals are becoming extinct. The Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors Girl Scouts learned about carbon footprint and how to reduce their carbon footprint, made solar ovens, planted grass and flower seeds in bio-degradable egg cartons, learned about compost and how to make a compost bin in their own backyard and they made mats and change purses out of the plastic grocery bags that you see all over our deserts.

At the closing ceremony on Saturday evening there was an extra surprise for one Junior Girl Scout; Rachel Dean of North Las Vegas was awarded the Life Saving Medal of Honor for saving the life of a four year old. While on vacation Rachel noticed a young girl go into the water to go swimming without anyone with her. It only took a moment before the little girl was under the water and in distress. Rachel pulled the girl out of the water coughing and sputtering. After the award, the evening ended with more Girl Scout songs and, of course, smore’s.
