Several Moapa Valley scouts, all members of special Jamboree Troop 947, last Saturday earned an estimated $500 in an early morning yard sale as they continued their daunting quest to earn the money to attend the 2010 National Scout Jamboree near Washington. D.C.

The scouts in the jamboree troop, which was created specifically for boys seeking to attend the huge scout gathering near the nation’s capital next summer, have been working since April

earning money toward their goal of $3,800 per youth, according to Hal Mortensen, acting jamboree troop scout master.

“Our goal is to take a troop of 38 youths between 12 and 18 years old to the jamboree,” Mortensen said. “We need $160,000, which would cover all 38 kids. Ideally, we’d like to be able to earn all the money for all the boys but that’s an awful lot of money.”

The scout master said that the $3,800 each boy needs would be all inclusive and cover everything including air fare, hotels, buses and all the other expenses we expect.

Parents of scouts and members of the LDS Logandale Second Ward donated the items sold in Saturday’s yard sale, said Robin Maughan who is assisting the troop and acting as its fundraising chairman.

“The fundraising has been good but it’s been very slow,” she said.

Among other activities, the scouts in Troop 947 worked the parking lot at the Clark County Fair, worked with Partners in Conservation pulling tamarisk trees, helped clean up Clark County School District property, conducted car washes, yard sales, bake sales and sno cone sales, Mortensen said.

Maughan added they’re now selling Little Caesar’s pizzas and cookie dough.

“We plan to have a table at the Pomegranate Festival this year selling smoked turkeys,” she said. “We buy the turkeys and the Great Basin Cooking Co. will smoke and return them. The boys will then deliver them Thanksgiving week. People can also call me directly (398-3655) to order a turkey.

“Also at the Pomegranate Festival, interested residents can sign up to have a boy do odd jobs around their homes,” Maughan continued. “We have other activities and yard sales planned in the coming months but it’s a daunting task in this economic climate. They are also planning to sell See’s candy for Valentine’s Day.”

Mortensen said the two-week trip to the 2010 jamboree includes a tour of major historic sites in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and Boston, MA. The last eight days will be at the jamboree.

“The actual jamboree is at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia near several Civil War landmarks,” he said. “The 76,000-acre facility has hosted the national jamboree since 1981. It will be an unbelievable event for the kids. They’re expecting 45,000 scouts to attend.”

Currently there are 33 scouts from Moapa Valley, 1 from Las Vegas and 2 from Mesquite in Moapa Valley Jamboree Troop 947. There is still room for a couple more.

“This is a real financial burden for some of these kids,” Mortensen said. “We may have to ask for some of the money from the families of the scouts even though we’d like to earn enough to cover everything for every boy.”

Mortensen said the boys in Troop 947 have shown exceptional dedication. All the fundraising is in addition to their regular troop activities. For example, there is a campout planned at Warm Springs in a couple of weeks and the scouts will be involved in a service project. Additionally, some of the boys are also involved in other activities like sports in school.

“So far, NV Energy donated $5,000 and Wal-Mart in Mesquite gave us $1,000,” Mortensen said. “If others would like to help they just have to make a donation to the Las Vegas Scout office and designate that their donation is for Troop 947.

“We would love to have one donor for all of it,” he continued. “But we also realize it’s an awful lot of money even though it’s tax deductable. We’ve already had three boys drop out because of the money issue. I told them to just hang on but it’s discouraging.”
