Approximately 30 pets and their owners showed up for the Blessing of the Animals held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Monday, October 5.

Most pets in attendance were dogs, but several cats showed up too. Not to be left out of the blessings were a hamster, a tortoise and a rooster. Someone was even brave enough to show up with a large basket full of puppies.

Eleven year-old Bailey Kesl, who came with her mom, brother, two dogs and a tortoise was excited to see all of the animals gathered. “It was so cool to see,” Kesl said. “The dogs were a little wild though.”

Father Bob Puhlman and those in attendance read a psalm, and small medals were handed out for each pet’s collar. Father Bob also blessed the animals individually with holy water.
Juan Carlos Solis waits for his rooster, Charo, to be blessed. Each animal in attendance was special to its owner. Ron and Gerry, who recently moved to Mesquite from Delaware, were excited to drive to Logandale for the event. They brought with them Shelby, their 15 year-old dog who has lost her hearing.

The event, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, was the first of its kind in Moapa Valley.

Organizer, Tasha Gorman, was pleased with the turnout “I was happy to see so many pets and their owners come,” Gorman said. “I thought it was a good showing, considering that the Blessing of the Animals hasn’t been done here before. I’m really grateful to Father Bob for giving me some guidance and for driving here from Mesquite to do the blessing. It went well and it’ll be fun to do again next year.”
