The parking lot was packed and so was the grass, the baseball field and the golf area! It was filled with cars, motorcycles, tractors, even a motorhome.
Russ Babb, event coordinator, knows his stuff when it comes to putting on a good show. He made the event “family friendly” by including a bounce house for the kids, a huge slide, even a small train ride. And if mom isn’t into the cars, well, there were plenty of vendors with jewelry and knick-knacks to rummage through. The food sold by vendors was delicious. Most of it being handmade with a real small town touch to everything. Though the car and motorcycle show has grown each year it still maintains a friendly and neighborly atmosphere. One interesting story was that of a blue ’67 Ford Mustang and an orange ’69 Chevy Chevelle. The judges had a very hard time choosing their favorite, and were struggling with who should take the trophy even up to ceremony time. “The Chevelle is so clean and the engine would blow the socks off the Mustang on the street,” said Carl Striegel, a car judge. “But the Mustang just has so much detail, look here, (pointing to a mirror laying on the ground under the car), they want us to see the undercarriage, it’s so clean, nothing was overlooked. It is a perfect car!” |
I think Dick Webb was willing to scrap for the prize, though Dan Bailey is clearly larger and would have most assuredly won. Who knows who the true winner of the Under Construction Division was, (I think it was Dan. He was later seen on the side of the Blvd with his ‘Under Construction’ vehicle stalled and awaiting rescue from his son-in-laws), it didn’t matter who really won, they were having way too much fun to care!
There were more motorcycles at this years event too. “Robin Dixon took over the Motorcycle part of the event and has helped bring in a lot more bikes.” stated Babb Local guy, ‘Dirty’ Dixon, brought his 2000 Fat Boy Harley Davidson to the show and took first place in the Open Header Division. When it was time for him to receive his trophy he mounted up on his hog and cruised it up to the stage where the MC, Billy Feeney, encouraged him to, “Rev it up!” “Whoa, that’s got a good bark to it!” chuckled Feeney. That must have been about the time when all who were in downtown began to wonder, “What’s that loud reverberating sound coming from the park?” Well it was Dirty, and his hog was loud! Though people with names like “Dirty”, and “Sasquach” were walking around, it didn’t dampen the mood, it only added to the color of the day. And people like Jerry Matthews, Bob Barracco, Denise Mohr, Chris Mohr, Carl Striegel, and Kenny Schmitt, who were so nice and accommodating balanced it completely. I’m sure there were many more who made this event happen so well. If you weren’t at this years Car and Motorcycle show, I hope you now have a taste for what you missed and that you make it a point to put it in your calendar to catch next years event. |
