Bowler PTA Attends ‘Let’s Make A Deal’

If you’ve ever been fascinated with the concept of choosing between three doors, then you might be a fan of the T.V. game show “Let’s Make a Deal”. The newly revised CBS show is now being taped in Las Vegas and the local Bowler Elementary School PTA was invited to attend. They were also given $20 per person to attend as a fundraiser because they are a non-profit organization.

A group of Grant Bowler PTA members travelled to Las Vegas last week to attend a filming of Let’s Make A Deal
One of the best parts of going to the show was that they couldn’t go as themselves, they had to attend in costume. “What are you dressing up as?” was the question of the week among the group.

When they finally gathered together there was a clown, a 60’s nerd, punk rockers, pirates, a vampire, a witch, a flapper and sleeping beauty.

The group left early Thursday morning with heavy purses full of random items in the hopes of getting being challenged with something like… “If you have a spork in your bag, I’ll give you a hundred dollars.”

They headed towards the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. The crew of the show took them though the many obstacles of becoming an audience member. It was hours of standing in lines; a stack of forms to fill out; picture taken and even a round of interviews. The crew then collected all cell phones.

It was three hours before the local team finally got a seat on the back row of the studio. But the show still didn’t start taping.

Once seated and waiting for the show to start the PTA was entertained by the audience coordinator named Rocco. He had music pumping and show tickets to give away.

The group was getting worried that their hands would tire and their cheering voices would not hold much longer when finally the new host of the show, Wayne Brady, appeared right behind them.

He got the show started by picking a “trader” right away. A “trader” is a contestant he randomly picks from the audience. The PTA watched traders given a few choices of prizes and cheered them on in hopes for them to win big. All the while trying to steer the trader away from where they thought a ZONK was hidden. (A ZONK is the unwanted outlandish prize).

During commercial breaks the show’s producer had the audience practice laughing, cheering and yelling for specific doors. They learned a lot about how a taping works and that picking audience members at random may not really be all that random.

The show may not have scored them big prizes but it did give them a lot of air time. They were seated behind the host and his many “traders”. For some the number 33 will forever haunt them. But at the end of the day it was an experience that they all will remember.

The airdate for this taping has not yet been decided.
