fires and what to do in cases where they are in danger concerning fires. Eight different areas were set up to teach and share a different safety feature.
Fire Ranger Johnson and Smokey the Bear were on hand from Mt. Charleston to talk to the kids about being safe with camp fires. The children were not only told how to take care of fires, they were shown. Kids giggled as Ranger Johnson pretended to be a tree that was too close to the fire. “Is this safe?” he asked. “NO!” shouted the children. In another area, beds were set up to have kids try first-hand what they need to do if they wake up to smoke and fire alarms. Because smoke rises, kids were taught to crawl, touch the door before you open it and how to escape from a window. The children also practiced Stop, Drop and Roll. Also discussed was when it’s okay and how to dial 911. |
