Every book lovers dream is to find best seller novels at a fraction of the original price. The library book sale held on Saturday, October 24 was the place to be for just that. Books on every subject were available for purchase at a discount. In addition to books, there were plenty of Cd’s, DVDs, and video’s.

The sale was held at the Moapa Valley Library and was organized by the Moapa Valley

Library Angels. The Angels started this tradition in 2006, putting on their first book sale to benefit the library’s children supplies used throughout the year.

“We were talking to Debbie one day when she mentioned that after the library districts funds were used they dipped into their own pocket,” said Library Angel, Jo Tame. “That’s when we thought-Why don’t we have a book sale!”

The other Angels names are Betty Halverson, Nan Thompson, Bonnie Koopman, Colleen Webb, and Connie O’Harra.

Librarian Debbie Hamilton and her current staff of six do many excellent children’s programs throughout the year. With current budgets being cut, however, the staff is very appreciative of the donation they receive from this book sale.

The Angels have specified that the funds be used for the children’s programs. Over 6,000 patrons walk through the library doors every month. For a community of this size that’s an impressive number.

“We are part of the library district and we have so much more than just books,” Hamilton said. “We have free Wi-Fii, Internet, lap-sit, puzzles, audio books, and many movies. Having that many people come through our doors shows that this is a main attraction in the valley. It’s a place children are safe and can have access to items and crafts that otherwise they may not access at home.”

The library Angels donation helps to insure that the children have crafts and parties throughout the year. The book sales money ensures that the year will contain Easter egg hunts, Halloween parties, sand painting contest, baking and more elaborate craft making.

The children’s programs at the library are well attended. At a typical library story time the library can see anywhere from 10-20 children attend, Hamilton said. Crafts are done three times a month at the library.

The Angels all volunteer their time and effort for local children. There are also the Angels husbands who set up, carry, collect and help to organize the sale. This year they received extra help in the form of a corvette. Okay well he prefers to be called Corvette Cal Calcaterra. Along with Jackie Worthen and Fran Holt.

The Angels collect paper and craft items also. They collect books all year long and store them in their garages and homes. It doesn’t stop there. Any item not sold is then donated to the local Toy’s for Tot’s program. It’s a pleasant experience to see the children’s books being discussed among local parents. It also is evident to see that children want to read books. Just after an hour of opening the book sale there where less than half a dozen children’s books left.
