Spectators at the Moapa Valley High School Homecoming football game tomorrow will be greeted with a welcome sight. Over the past two weeks the school’s football stadium has been fitted with a brand new, state of the art, scoreboard.

The $60,000 scoreboard was funded entirely by private donations from the community. The fundraising process began in August of 2008. Local businesses and individuals were approached with requests to donate to the cause. “Shane Hickman (MVHS teacher) really deserves a lot of the credit for making this happen,” said MVHS Principal, Grant Hanevold. “He went out and arranged a lot of the funding and got it done.”

Within a couple of months, enough money was raised to order the sign. The order was made about a year ago, Hanevold said.

Funding for the sign came from Moapa Valley Federal Credit Union, Lin’s Marketplace, Moapa Valley Telephone Company, Mesquite Medical Association, Meadow Gold, Moapa Valley Freight, Wheeler Electric and the MVHS Booster Club.

The school was able to save several thousand dollars in shipping expenses for the sign. This was because Moapa Valley Freight company arranged to ship the scoreboard to the school from the manufacturer in South Dakota, Hanevold said. The new scoreboard arrived at the school early last summer.

The big job of installing the sign was done by local contractor, Wheeler Electric. “Rod Leavitt and the Wheeler Electric crew deserve tremendous kudos,” said Hanevold. “They donated time, energy and materials; thousands of dollars in labor and man hours, to get the sign up.” Hanevold added that Wheeler Electric was assisted in the efforts by Overton Power District crews.

“We truly appreciate the business community for stepping up and being so generous to get this done,” Hanevold concluded. “If we had to rely on regular school district channels to get a new scoreboard, it likely would have been years.”
