Halloween Jubilee Celebrated At Valley Of Fire State Park

Winding slowly through the Valley of Fire I felt the presence of the many creatures that abide there – watching – waiting. A giant lizard slithered by as I climbed the hill and passed the elephant standing tall and majestically. Soon I came to the fish and the monkey beckoning me on to the seven sisters who welcomed me to stay for a bit. But I declined as my destiny, the Atlatl Rock, was just ahead.

As I left the land of imagination I came to a land of creatures of the night. A jolly pirate seemed to be in charge. His mortal name was Don Bolton, an Interpretive Park Ranger with the Nevada State Parks, before he was transformed on that fateful day, October 31, Halloween. Bolton said, with an evil smile, that these festivities lure in 150 to 200 folks annually to the magical area of the Valley of Fire State Park.

Hailey Wilson of Las Vegas, in costume as an angel bowls with pumpkins at the Valley Of Fire Halloween Jubilee held on Saturday.
There were princesses and fairies, witches and superheroes. It boggled the mind. They were there to bowl with pumpkins, throw the magical hoop, challenge the ping pong ball toss and to make fast work of the witches brew so generously offered.
Long time attendees, Samson and Madison from Las Vegas, playing cop and robber at the Jubilee. Under the control of the pirate, performing his bidding, were many creatures known as – volunteers. Among them were those in uniforms signifying they were Boy Scouts of America. I inquired from whence they were summoned. Troop 17 out of Las Vegas was the reply and they were beckoned from their meeting place at the Roy Martin Middle School.

I ventured past a holding area of low flying witches who had missed their mark, gathered my noble steed and slowly left this haunted arena that had been called forth by the Nevada State Park Cooperative Association perhaps to come again sometime – perhaps next year.
