Sounds of laughter filled the air Friday night at the Old Overton Gym’s Old Fashioned Carnival. Over 200 people attended this year’s event, held October 30. The event is a look back at simpler times, when the fall carnival was held yearly in this historic building. Local teacher Nancy Postma recalls attending the event as a child. “There was a parade down Main Street, and the carnival here,” she remembers.

Ramona Crane reprised her role as the pocket lady this year, and was a huge hit with the kids. Kids of all ages crowded around her vying for their chance to rummage through the many pockets on her dress. The pockets held a variety of toys and candy, and she encouraged kids to look for what they might want, instead of taking the first thing they pulled out.

The Mack Lyon Dance team manned several of the game booths, including the ring toss and bean bag toss. All the team members were out in force to make sure that the visiting children had a great time playing the games, which were available for the mere price of a ticket.

Boy Scout Troop 118 was on hand to man the bowling booth. Children at this booth rolled a ball down a makeshift lane in an attempt to knock over soda bottle pins. Each participant received a prize. At the end of the night, the boys and their leaders stuck around to help clean up.

Moapa Valley Rotary was on hand serving up sloppy joes, chips, and drinks to families for a small donation to the gym. There was also a popcorn booth, complete with two old-fashioned popcorn machines working overtime to provide families with freshly popped corn.

Tables of baked goods lined one side of the gym. The treats were part of the bake sale portion of the event and included all types of goodies, from pumpkin concoctions and cupcakes to caramel corn and roasted nuts, all to be had for a minimal price.

“How wonderful to watch neighbors bringing in armfuls of baked goodies to sell to the crowd,” Chris Green, Overton Gym Board Member states. “I got to see parents lifting up their kids to see photos of Grandmas and Grandpas in with their school teams and trophies,” she stated, “It was just magic to me.”

The Old Overton Gym has begun its annual membership drive. Individuals can become Century Club Members of the Old Gym by contributing an annual $100 donation. Donations may be sent to the Old Gym at PO Box 313, Overton, NV 89040. For more information about membership or the gym, call 397-2002.
