Halloween proved to be a lucky day for the 4th and 5th grade Pirates football team. These young kids played their second home game at the Moapa Valley High School football field on Halloween morning. Their team colors were just right for the day with orange, black and white uniforms. All things fell into place just right and the Pirates took their second victory of the season. Both wins on home turf.

Jacob Reahm glides in for one of his many touchdown runs during Saturday’s home game.
This year’s Pirate team includes four new coaches and a new set of players. Of 24 kids on the team only one had previous experience with tackle football. The new coaches have had their work cut out for them. All other teams in the league consist of 5th graders, the Pirates team consists of eleven 4th graders and thirteen 5th graders. “Each of the players have improved over the course of the season.” explained Head Coach Jaydel Wilson.

Wilson explained that the kids have made great strides when it comes to improving fundamentals. “We took some lumps at the beginning of the season,” he said. The coaches recently moved the kids around to different positions to change things up a bit which has fared well for the team. “Everyone has accepted the role we asked them to play.” said Wilson.

The past two games played on home turf have been a turning point for this new team. On Saturday, Oct. 24, the team took on Pine View with a final score of 27-7 giving them their first win. Last Saturday’s game against Dixie ended with a final score of 36-0.

Over the past two weeks Jacob Rheam has been virtually unstoppable as he has scored an effortless six touchdowns. Dayton Wolfley impressed the crowd as he scored a touchdown on a punt return, Drake Staheli has scored a touchdown and Anthony Cornwall has scored a touchdown.

The coaches have been happy with their young team. “They are an enjoyable group of players to be around and the parent support has been great this year,” said Wilson. The coaching staff are looking forward to the final game against Virgin Valley on Saturday. “It will be a tough game, Virgin Valley is undefeated,” Wilson said.
