The Annual Moapa Valley High School Homecoming Parade and Assembly was held on Wednesday evening, October 28. Students, parents and Pirate fans gathered along on the sidewalk s surrounding the school to watch the parade go by.

The parade began with a tribute to Lysha Marshall and Heather Wallace, two MVHS students who were killed in an auto accident last June. The MVHS band followed, as well as the football team, cheerleaders, dancers and class floats with the royalty inside.

After the parade, everyone filed into the school gymnasium for a pep assembly. The assembly was opened with the Moapa Valley Fight Song. Shortly after, Matt Messer directed the Senior Athlete Recognition. Every senior involved in a sport was introduced in front of the audience and received a yellow rose with a blue ribbon.

The Freshman Princess was Cortney Watts, escorted by Nathan Sprague. Sophomore Princess was Tibi Willard, escorted by Parker Chappell. Junior Princess, Jessany Mortensen was escorted by Brendan Watkins. And Senior Princess, Halie Mortensen was escorted by James Frehner.

The candidates for Homecoming Queen and King were then introduced. The three candidates for Homecoming King were Daniel Belman, Colton Doty, and Cole Lacroix, while the candidates for Homecoming Queen were Trina Dalley, Kaitlin Leatham, and Haley Leavitt.

The six candidates stood in front of the audience as the judges proclaimed the winners. Colton Doty was announced as Homecoming King and Haley Leavitt was crowned Homecoming Queen.

Parade Grand Marshall, Jimmy Yamashita was then introduced. The 85 year old Mr. Yamashita spoke for a moment about how surprised he was to see how large his old alma mater had become since he graduated in 1942.

“When I came to school here, the student body was perhaps as big as your pep band there,” he told the chuckling audience.

Later in the assembly, the football coaches revealed the new 2008 state championship banner. “Last year I thought it would be cool to come home with a 2008 banner,” said head coach Brent Lewis. “But this year wouldn’t it be even cooler to come home with a 2009 banner?”

The crowd went wild.
