The annual Powder Puff football game during homecoming is more than girls with painted faces, jerseys, and ponytails. The two teams playing each other consisted of girls from Moapa Valley High School. The team named Little Giants were a combination of Seniors and Freshmen. Team White Magic held Juniors and Sophomores together. The two teams are in it to win it. Especially the team Little Giants who were invested in this game. This year’s senior girls have not won in the past three years.

The night’s chilly wind didn’t stop fans from flocking to see the girls play a round of football. To keep the fans in the bleachers cheering were local reversed-roled cheerleaders; Orey Woods and Casey Rawson. The game started out with the first touchdown by #10 Kali McMillan. It was just the beginning of Little Giants dominance throughout the game. Despite the blustering cold the girls on both teams play hard and strong.

Helping the girls were fellow coaches from their own grades. Matt Newton, Cameron Lim, Jake Pearce, Dillon Gordan, and Alex Huerta helped Little Giants during the week. Casen Lewis, Hayden Cooper, Ray Belavance, Ben Rebman, and Kelan Weiss all helped team White Magic learn basic plays and runs.

“I had a lot of fun coaching the offense for the girls,” said Hayden Cooper. “We started out a little slow, but they all learned the positions and ended up doing a great job for us. Our team had a blast at the game, and all the girls did a great job.”

Also there to referee the game were MVHS coaches: Matt Messer, Jeff Keel, Brandon Jones, and Brent Lewis. All seemed to have a chuckle and a smile watching these girls navigate through plays.

Yes many flags, fumbles, penalties, and time-outs were called. But time seemed to pass quicker than usual games.

In the end it was a four-peat of losses for the Senior/Freshman girls team. Little Giants lost 14-30 to the junior/sophomore team, White Magic.

White Magic’ captains, who admitted they were intimidated at first, were grateful for players like Kim Sprague, McKinzy Hoy, and Cali McMillan to lead the victorious team.

Little Giants team captains: Ariel Perez, Alisa Eidie, Chelsea Leavitt, and Analise Barlow all agreed that they were proud of how their team played. “I’m not going to lie. I’m not very happy about it,” Alisa quietly added with a shy smile.

No doubt a thought every senior girl was thinking. They hope to see the freshman girls win the title next year.
