Local WWII Vets Honored At VFW Dinner

The local VFW Post 8336 held a special dinner on Saturday night at the Old Logandale School to honor World War II Veterans living in Moapa Valley. Eighteen local WWII veterans and their family members were honored at the dinner and were given seats at a large head table. About 50 people in all attended the event including VFW leadership at the state and district level.

Congresswoman Dina Titus was an honored guest at the event. Titus made a brief appearance early in the evening and said a few words of appreciation to the local veterans. She recognized the small group of WWII veterans as among the ranks of the ‘Greatest Generation’ of Americans. And she expressed appreciation for the sacrifice and service which they had given to their country.

Later in the evening, Nevada State VFW Commander Herman Hagen addressed the audience in a speech to honor the WWII veterans.

Hagen also recognized them as among the greatest generation. “Your country called and you answered,” he told the men. “You didn’t ask for anything. You did what you did because it was the right thing to do.”

Cathy Hollinger of the VFW 8336 Women’s Auxiliary presented each of the WWII veterans with a U.S. Flag.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the MVHS Jazz Band. The meal was catered by Muddy River Grill and served by MVHS National Honors Society students.
