explained were being taken care of by Mack Lyon Middle School Ag students.
O’Toole then led the tour to the front gardens, where rows of broccoli currently flourish. Titus and O’Toole discussed the chickens in the field, what the vegetables are used for, and the orchard. O’Toole and Craig Wolfley explained how the students at MVHS built all the greenhouses on the site, as well as the straw bale building, which is slated to become a classroom. The tour ended up in the climate controlled greenhouse. Titus was amazed at the rows of tomatoes vining up toward the ceiling. O’Toole explained how the vegetables in the greenhouse were allotted, with the first of the vegetables going to the culinary program, then to fulfill a standing order with Sugar’s Home Plate Restaurant. Some of the produce is sold to the general public and some is taken to the Overton Senior Center to be used in their meals. Finally Titus was presented with two gift baskets of fresh produce from the ag students and some homemade pomegranate jelly from the culinary students. Titus was pleased with the important work of education being done at the local farm. “It is important to keep the public aware of programs like this,” Titus said. “It is just amazing to see what these students can achieve, even with limited funding.” |
