Bowler Students Collect Shoes For Haiti

Grant Bowler Elementary School held an unexpected shoe drive on Thursday, January 28 after receiving a phone call the day before from local mom Salina Canfield. Salina's husband, who works for KHS&S, mentioned to her that his company was collecting shoes for Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization sending shoes to Haiti. Salina was definitely interested in doing something for the survivors and thought, "We could do that, (she and her kids), we could go door to door, we could get a million shoes!"

Salina Canfield with her truck fully loaded with shoes from the Soles4Souls shoe drive that was conducted last week at Grant Bowler Elementary school.
And so door-to-door she went. Maybe she didn't quite reach a million, but she and her kids collected close to a hundred pairs.

After such a great success, Salina thought to call Grant Bowler. Her inquiry was immediately accepted and the word spread like wild fire! "Soles4Souls is sending shoes to the Haiti survivors!" This is all that needed to be said, oh, and that the class who collected the most shoes would get a root beer float party courtesy of Salina!

The Grant Bowler students sent the word out to parents in one single day and collected over 1,200 pairs of shoes! And this is without a note even being sent home!

"The kids pulled this whole thing together, they were really into it!" stated Karla Fetherston, office manager at Grant Bowler.

Yes, the kids spread the word, but we do need to give some credit to the great group of moms at Bowler who hit the phones and made calls to get the word out.

As the bags and bags of shoes came in to Grant Bowler, the student council members worked diligently banding the pairs together and tracking the total from each class. The winning class was Mrs. Bartle's with 153 pairs of shoes! Yes, they got a root beer float party!

When I finally talked to Salina on Friday evening she was enraptured at the amount of shoes she had collected for the Soles4souls organization. "You should see my truck!" she said.

And so I did! I was amazed at what 1,200 pairs of shoes looks like. And the shape the shoes were in was pretty good too! I spied a pretty nice pair of cowboy boots that I know someone is going to just love!

Souls4Soles has a simple concept: "We get shoes and give them away!" You can go to Soles4souls.org and see just what it is they're up to.
