The recent story headlined “Cappalappa Loses Most Of Its Grant Funding” (Progress: July 28, 2010) should be corrected.
Penny Vallone, director of the Cappalappa Family Resource Center, is quoted stating that the center was rejected for County grant funds, which is inaccurate.
The County did seek notices of interest from agencies wanting to apply for available Outside Agency Grant funds. We received 105 proposals for $8 million in funding, including the proposal from CFRC. The committee that evaluates the proposals has not even met yet, therefore, no determination has been made. We should finalize the list of grant recipients sometime in September.
A responsible reporter would have contacted Clark County’s Community Resources to verify that the information was accurate. We ask that you print a correction as soon as possible.

Two months into their fiscal year, they still don’t know definitively of the status of their grant. Who can blame CFRC for trying to make other funding arrangements by appealing to the community for help, as was the main point of the article Mr. Collins cites?
We are gratified to know that, due to this story, meaningful communication between County staff and CFRC has commenced. We look forward, in the near future, to reporting, as we have every summer for many years, on the County’s (and the Commissioner’s) continued support for this essential community institution.
