The Moapa Valley High School Varsity and J.V. Cheerleading squads attended an elite summer cheer camp at Knotts Berry Farm in California held on August 9-12. The camp brought together 650 cheerleaders and dancers from all over the western United States.
The week long camp provided a busy schedule for the participants. The girls began their days early at 8:00 a.m. and didn’t stop until about 10:00 p.m. each day.
The four days were filled with activities and training. The girls learned new techniques for stunting and were taught new chants and cheers. They were also privileged to have three master choreographers come and teach them dances.
The local teams excelled at the camp receiving the Spirit Stick and two superior awards for which they were recognized with a plaque & ribbons in both chant and fight song.
The camp instructors were impressed with the creativity that was shown in the routines and commented on the appeal the cheerleaders had with engaging the crowd. “You can definitely tell they are having fun and enjoying what they are doing,” said one USA camp instructor.
As camp concluded, varsity cheer captain Dani Swanson was selected as one of ten girls invited to return and join the USA team in the future as a cheer camp instructor.
Coaches Denise Robison and Shannon Zobrist were proud of what the girls were able to accomplish. “One of the goals we have is to become more unified as a cheer squad,” Zobrist said. “Camp was a great experience in which we saw a unity develop between the girls that we hope will continue throughout the year. We have some very talented and hard working girls. We are looking forward to having an exciting and fun-filled year.”
